Overview

Nestled in the heart of Málaga-Este on C. Cervantes, Restaurante La Trastienda offers an authentic dive into traditional Spanish cuisine with an intimate, unpretentious ambiance. The restaurant’s charm lies not only in its culinary offerings but also in the genuine hospitality that welcomes each guest warmly. This local gem remains a sanctuary for those seeking well-crafted dishes without the pretense found in tourist-heavy spots.

The menu highlights a diverse selection of classic Andalusian flavors, emphasizing fresh seafood and hearty meat dishes. Signature plates like Ensaladilla Rusa provide a comforting start, while standout flavors emerge in the Rabo de Toro—tender oxtail slow-cooked to perfection—and the Bacalao Trastienda, a creative take on beloved cod preparations that reflect the region’s maritime heritage. Be it Navajas a la Plancha or crisp Angiovie Fritte, seafood lovers will find themselves delighted by the freshness and finesse.

Atmosphere at La Trastienda is relaxed yet attentive. Diners appreciate the open-air seating when weather permits, where the bustle of Málaga’s eastern quarter blends with the aromas wafting from the kitchen. Staff, often praised for their warmth and knowledge, take genuine care in both service and recommendations, elevating the experience to one of comfort and trust. Regulars and visitors alike savor the balance between traditional recipes and the personalized touch given to each plate.

For those drawn to robust, meaty fare, the restaurant excels with offerings such as the leg of lamb served with fried potatoes and padrón peppers—a dish hailed for its tenderness and seasoning. The wine selection, primarily local reds, pairs beautifully, rounding off a meal that feels both rich and homegrown.

La Trastienda’s clientele tends to be a blend of locals seeking familiar flavors and curious travelers eager for a deep dive into genuine Spanish gastronomy. Its location in Málaga-Este makes it accessible yet off the beaten path, ideal for those who value quality over tourist crowds.

In sum, Restaurante La Trastienda stands out as a reliable bastion of regional cuisine where tradition meets hospitality. Its unassuming space and commitment to service ensure that anyone who steps inside feels part of a story deeply rooted in Andalusian culture.

Wandered upon this local spot and my oh my am I glad I did. I was greeted warmly by a genial man with a thick Spanish accent and a nice Soot, who is screwing about to ensure each diner outside was well taken care of. I was in the mood for meat and asked for a recommendation. They offered up the leg of lamb, And it was all I could do to not ask for a second portion. Tender and succulent and well seasoned, it was served with fried potatoes and patron peppers. I complimented this with a glass of red wine and before they brought my check, I made a reservation for the next night. Highly recommended!!!

Fantastic. Authentic. A true Spanish culinary delight. The carrillada and rabo de toro are second to none. And so much more!!! But the service is what really sets them apart. In a town overrun by tourist, and with many catering to the masses and sacrificing service for volume, this spot remains true to its service values. Benn here several times, and I can’t wait to return.

Visit date 29.11.2024 We were sitting outside because the restaurant was full at lunch time. But weather was still nice. Waiter brought us even daily specials menu. I enjoyed my cod in tomato sauce but my parents we not happy with their (bacalao a la bilbaína). Tasted too oily and like medium raw. Maybe that's the Spanish way of preparing cod but we didn't expect that at all or too busy at this hour (~14:30) Starter: salmon tartar with avocado - delicious.

One of the most unique local food we’ve had - a very fresh welcome after having the same Spanish food constantly. This place was a very refreshing change while keeping to local traditions. Had the fried eggplant with goats cheese and what my wife and I now regard the best beef sirloin dish we ever had after our years of travel here. Their aperitifs are great too. Will return for sure

The place is amazing! It’s the local experience you are looking for. The seafood was fresh and perfectly cooked, we’ve also chosen the fish of the day (red fish) & we ate it how the chef recommended. The service is amazing and I recommend this place from the bottom of my heart

The food was simple and amazing! The staff was super friendly and attentive! We stopped in front of the restaurant to check the menu and we were invited to seat. I didn't need to beg to make an order. Simply perfect! Also, the food reminded me of my grandma's food in Brazil!
